Hello Teachers of Hamilton-Wentworth.
I probably say this every year but, I can’t believe it’s May and with May comes transfers.
The unit office continues to be part of discussions involving staffing for next year. This is an extremely complex process with many needs and many considerations. The board, as an employer, has numerous legal obligations as well as contractual ones. We continue to monitor these processes in order to ensure proper protocols have been followed. Please bring issues to our attention, especially through your OECTA Reps, as they are the people at each site who can efficiently bring details to the attention of the office.
Everyone will receive their initial placement on Friday, May 2nd (surplus declarations are communicated tomorrow).
The unit has also been working toward compliance with various collective bargaining issues. The focus has been on the Online Reporting Tool (ORT), missed planning time banking and other considerations, as well as a new pilot adjudication program for sick leave and other central term items. This has resulted in many local meetings to clarify and finalize various details.
The office has been actively engaged in various Association and Joint-board initiatives, a trend that will continue into the upcoming Catholic Education Week. A number of members have been in the office to prepare for these events. As well, we are always seeking member participation in a range of committee opportunities, which offer valuable avenues for involvement and for shaping the future direction of our local Association. Interested members are encouraged to contact the office for further details on these opportunities.
Our Unit General Meeting is coming up this month. It is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21st at St. Naum’s. As usual, dinner begins at 4:00 pm with the meeting beginning at 4:30 pm. If you haven’t already, please sign up by clicking the following link; General Meeting Registration. There will be a number of topics that are dealt with including our local executive elections. Hope to see everyone there. Members are always encouraged to reach out to the office if you have any questions.
Please take time this spring for yourself and your families. Many people have started a countdown and a well deserved break is around the corner.
Be well.
Josh
On Wednesday May 21, 2025, local unit elections will take place as part of our unit's General Meeting. Elections will be in-person and will occur at St. Naum of Ohrid Parish Hall - meeting starts at 4:30pm (food is served at 4:00pm).
Teachers attending must register before the meeting. All registrations will be asked for photo identification.
Members interested in running for a position should be aware of the following timeline:
May 7, 2025: Third call-out for interested candidates. (By-Law 4.2.3)
May 14, 2025: Nominations close. Final list of declared candidates is published. (By-Law 4.2.4)
May 21, 2025: Election Day
Additional candidates please e-mail Horst Schweinbenz at horst.schweinbenz@yahoo.ca your intention to run for the 2025-2026 Hamilton Wentworth Executive. Please indicate the position you are putting your name in. Please indicate as soon as possible.
Elections will be held in person at St. Naum of Ohrid Parish Hall. Candidates will have a maximum of 3 minutes for their speeches. The use of PowerPoint or similar presentation software is not permitted during speeches.
Step-Down procedures are permitted for unsuccessful candidates, with certain limitations in-place for the position of Equity Councillor and Occasional Teacher Rep. For added clarity, an unsuccessful candidate for First Vice-President may be considered for election to Third Vice-President, Recording Secretary, and Councillor but not to Equity Councillor or Occasional Teacher unless the candidate also meets the criteria for candidacy to those roles.
To be nominated for the Equity Councillor role, a Teacher must belong to one or more of the following:
Racialized Member
Member With Disabilities
2SLGBTQIA+ Member
Indigenous Member
Only members who self-identify as belonging to an Indigenous or Equity Deserving group can vote for this position.
Please direct any questions or concerns to Horst Schweinbenz.
In last month's newsletter, an article was published which did a deeper dive into some of the intricacies of the teacher transfer process. Please click here to review that information.
At this time, we would like to offer some reminders as the transfer process kicks-off. One key reminder is that once transfers begin, a school CANNOT shuffle assignments until all rounds of transfers are complete. That means if a teacher is successful in transferring in any round, the grade assignments cannot be changed within the school and a different grade posted in the next round. If a Grade 7 teacher gets a transfer, a Grade 7 position must be posted in the next round.
If a teacher was declared surplus from a school, and a teacher transfers out in any of the rounds, the surplus teacher can apply to position, however, this position is not automatically offered back to the surplus teacher. The reason why a teacher is declared surplus is because the school lost a classroom. Only when the school adds a new classroom (usually over the summer due to additional enrolment that was not anticipated) can a surplus teacher be offered that newly added position.
Another "frequently asked question" is what happens if there is a retirement during transfers or after transfers. If it occurs during transfers, grades cannot be shuffled and the position assigned to the teacher on May 2 must be posted. If a retirement occurs after transfers then grade changes at the school level can occur however, the May 2nd assignment must be honoured. This means the grade can be offered to staff who are qualified but staff can keep their May 2nd assignment. If no one wants to change grades then a newly hired teacher would be assigned the grade.
As we enter the month of May, the transfer procedure will unfold according to the timelines outlined in the table. Please contact the unit office with any questions on this process.

As we step into May and the school year draws towards its familiar, rhythmic conclusion, we find ourselves looking back on the year that was. It's a time to reflect not just on the curriculum covered or the assessments marked, but on the shared journey we've experienced with our students and our colleagues. We prepare to send our students off, armed with new knowledge and skills for the challenges ahead. And, we pause to honour those beloved colleagues with whom we've navigated the rewarding, complex path of education.
On May 29th, let us come together at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum to reflect upon and celebrate the exceptional careers of our colleagues – those reaching 25 Years of Service, and those now embarking on their well-deserved retirement. Reaching such landmarks requires extraordinary passion and unwavering commitment. It's a testament to resilience, camaraderie, and the enduring belief in the power of teaching to shape the lives of others.
Join us May 29th by completing the registration form contained in the link below. OECTA-HW members attend for FREE.
Have you reached one of these significant career milestones?

As we prepare to honour our esteemed retirees and members reaching their silver jubilee, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of experience woven throughout the history of OECTA-HW. The upcoming Retirement Celebration serves as a poignant moment not only to recognize individual careers but also to reflect on the collective journey of our Association in Hamilton-Wentworth. To help us capture and preserve the vibrant threads of this shared narrative, we are embarking on an important initiative: building a digital archive of our visual history.
Have you ever found yourself lost in the history of the photos displayed in your school? Perhaps you, too, have recognized the surnames, echoes of the dedicated Catholic teachers who came before – oftentimes, the very family of colleagues we stand alongside today, indeed often our own family. These images are more than just snapshots; they are testaments to a continuing legacy. They remind us that we are bearers of the fruits of their labour, carrying forward the commitment to faith-filled education for this moment in time, before passing the torch to those who will follow - an enduring Hamilton Catholic community family.
Understanding where we came from illuminates the path ahead. These memories anchor us, reminding us of the values, the challenges overcome, and the enduring spirit of community that defines OECTA-HW. To enrich this understanding for current and future members, and to ensure these precious moments are not lost, the Retirement Celebration Committee kindly asks for your help.
We invite you to delve into your albums and digital files. Do you have staff photos, snapshots from school events, or images capturing the camaraderie of OECTA-HW gatherings from years past? Sharing these images will help us honour our retiring (and already retired) colleagues more deeply at this and future Retirement Celebrations, and crucially, will contribute to a lasting archive – a treasure trove of memories for generations to come. Let us ensure the faces, the stories, and the spirit of our OECTA-HW family endure.

As graduation season approaches, we remind Grade 8 Teachers to nominate a student from their school for the Harry Somerville and Sal Longley Service Award, and to submit their school's nominee to Len Moccia before the May long weekend (May 16). Awards will be mailed to schools in advance of graduation ceremonies.
Aa a gentle reminder, the award itself does not include a physical plaque or trophy. If your school wishes to present a plaque or trophy alongside the award, please make arrangements when placing your order for graduation awards.
Let's honour Harry and Sal by recognizing the next generation of service leaders in our schools! Submit your nominations today!
